Notes

Note that in both modes, the behaviour of silencing the The League of ExplorersRod of the Sun is as follows:[1][2]

  • The bearer of the Rod is still Immune. (This is because Blessings of the Sun (Heroic) is producing the Immune effect, not the Rod itself.)
  • The Rod no longer has its Deathrattle. Destroying the Rod will not spawn a new Rod.

If the Rod is destroyed and the player who would gain control of it already has seven minions, it will not respawn and is gone for good.

Strategy

Normal

The main mechanic of this encounter is the The League of ExplorersRod of the Sun, which makes whichever hero possesses it Immune. The Rod's Deathrattle allows the other hero to 'steal' it by destroying it. Combat therefore tends to revolve around grabbing the Rod as quickly as possible, while making the most of the Immune effect.

As Reno indicates, destroying the Rod while Phaerix controls it should be your priority. Cheap methods of destroying the Rod include LegacyShadow Word: Pain and LegacyCrazed Alchemist, the latter turning its Health to 0. Once you have gained control of the Rod, surround it with Taunt minions to prevent Phaerix from attacking the Rod and regaining it. Adding LegacyAcidic Swamp Ooze can help to prevent Phaerix from destroying your minions via a weapon.

So long as you have control of the Rod, destroying Phaerix's Tol'vir Hoplites will deal additional damage to Phaerix while leaving you unharmed, and their 2 Health makes them easy to kill.

Weapons can be very effective in this encounter since when used while Immune, the hero will suffer no damage, allowing you to clear the board and save your minions from trading.

Heroic

In Heroic, the Rod will gain a +3/+3 boost whenever Phaerix has control of it, and the player will not benefit from having control of the Rod. Therefore, it is to the player's advantage to take the rod out of the game (e.g. by Silencing it) as early as possible, as it helps Phaerix and does nothing for you.

Using a priest will help against Heroic Phaerix by means of LegacyShadow Word: Pain. The priest can also Silence the Rod before destroying it, which will prevent Phaerix from ever regaining control.

Heroic Phaerix follows a similar strategy to Normal mode, although Tol'vir Hoplites now have an upgraded 5 Health, and their Deathrattle will damage you regardless of whether you have the Rod. LegacyShadow Word: Death is a quick way to remove them, but you must make sure you have sufficient Health to survive their repeated assaults. A LegacyDivine Spirit/LegacyInner Fire combo with strong Taunt minions will also work.

Bugs

It has been observed that if you are in possession of the rod on the early turns (via LegacyCorruption or others) Phaerix will still use The Grand TournamentFlame Lance to destroy his own Hoplites. This may be a bug.
