Notes

To edit these notes, go to Template:Spellbender notes.

  • Spellbender takes effect when the enemy uses any targeted spell on any minion, whether allied or not. Only player-targeted spells will trigger the secret, not randomly targeted ones.
  • Regardless of what type of spell triggers it, a Spellbender minion will be summoned under the control of the player who played the Secret. That minion is then made the new target for the triggering spell, be it a damaging attack, a useful buff or even LegacyMind Control.
  • Spells which require their targets to meet certain criteria, such as LegacyShadow Word: Death and LegacyExecute, will still take full effect when re-targeted to the Spellbender, even if the Spellbender does not itself meet the criteria.
  • If a spell with a return to hand effect is intercepted by Spellbender, such as LegacyShadowstep or Goblins vs GnomesTime Rewinder, the Spellbender minion will be returned to the hand of the player who played the Secret, not that of the player who cast the triggering spell.[1][2]
  • Spellbender activates after the spell has completed its casting phase, but before it takes effect. As a result:
    • If a LegacyCounterspell counters a spell, Spellbender will not activate from that spell.[3][4][5] This is because the Counterspell ends the spell casting sequence immediately, preventing Spellbender from triggering.
    • Spellbender takes effect after other "Whenever you cast a spell" triggered effects, such as LegacyMana Wyrm or LegacyArchmage Antonidas, regardless of order of play.[6]

Lore

While there is no specific character or spell with this name, the Spellbender minion displays a blood elf reflecting a spell. Blood elves are known to have become adept at absorbing, manipulating, and redirecting all forms of arcane, holy, and demonic magics. The Spellbender likely comes from a similar tradition to the Spellbreakers.
