Generated cards and Hero Powers
Notes
- Lord Jaraxxus, when played, transforms your hero into Lord Jaraxxus. Your current and maximum Health are set to 15, your Armor is set to 0,[1] your Hero Power is replaced by INFERNO! (which allows you to summon a 6/6 Infernal every turn for 2 mana), your class is set to warlock, and you equip Blood Fury (a weapon with 3 Attack and 8 Durability). Note that Jaraxxus won't be able to attack immediately using Blood Fury, if the hero he replaced already attacked that turn.[2]
- The Lord Jaraxxus hero counts as a Demon for the purpose of Sacrificial Pact. This will kill Lord Jaraxxus, though since the spell only targets friendly Demons after Patch 17.0.2.45932, in practice it rarely matters. However, other cards such as Mal'Ganis and Demonfuse do not count the Jaraxxus hero as a Demon, and will not affect him.
- Playing Lord Jaraxxus initially summons him as a minion, before his Battlecry transforms him into a hero who then takes over from the playing hero.
- Because of this, some effects that trigger when you summon a minion will affect him, such as Mirror Entity, which will summon a 3/15 Lord Jaraxxus minion for the opponent, albeit without any special abilities.
- However, Sword of Justice and Knife Juggler will not activate from playing Lord Jaraxxus.[3][4] This is likely because both of these effects activate from the resolution of Jaraxxus' summoning, which does not occur properly due to his becoming a hero partway through the process; similar to how Counterspell will prevent a Wild Pyromancer from activating.[5]
- Note that any effects which are triggered will activate in the normal sequence. In most cases, this means that they will activate after Jaraxxus becomes a hero, despite being designed to affect minions. For example, a Repentance will not reduce the Health of the Jaraxxus minion, but will activate once the hero has been turned into Jaraxxus, at which point the hero's maximum Health will be reduced to 1.[6][7]
- As his is a minion, Lord Jaraxxus cannot be played when the player's side of the battlefield is full (7 minions).[8]
- Once Jaraxxus has successfully become a hero, he no longer counts as a minion, and cannot be targeted with effects such as Demonfire or Rend Blackhand's Battlecry.[9]
- Because of this, some effects that trigger when you summon a minion will affect him, such as Mirror Entity, which will summon a 3/15 Lord Jaraxxus minion for the opponent, albeit without any special abilities.
- The Lord Jaraxxus minion can be put into play without activating its Battlecry through put into battlefield effects such as Voidcaller, Mindgames, or Dirty Rat. A Lord Jaraxxus minion can also be summoned through Bane of Doom.
- Playing Lord Jaraxxus will not destroy any of the hero's own Secrets.[10]
- When Lord Jaraxxus becomes a hero, he is considered to replace the previous hero. As a result, any modifiers affecting the previous hero will not be transferred. This includes Armor and the Frozen state.[11] However, less specific effects such as Millhouse Manastorm and Loatheb affect the enemy player regardless of their current hero, and will not be cancelled by playing Jaraxxus.[12][13]
- Lord Jaraxxus is a warlock hero and will interact with cards like Nefarian and Swashburglar accordingly. However, at the end of the match the player will still gain experience and ranked wins for the class with which they started the match.
- Any changes to Lord Jaraxxus' stats will change neither the amount of Health your hero is set to nor the weapon's stats, such as if Lord Jaraxxus was affected by hand buff effects like Spirit of the Bat or if it is a 1/1 copy created by cards like Shadowcaster.[14]
- Brann Bronzebeard triggers the Battlecry twice, but this will not have any special consequence other than seeing the animation twice.[15]
Strategy
Lord Jaraxxus is best played when you have less than 15 Health so you regain some Health. The new ability to summon 6/6 Infernals, in addition to Blood Fury, will increase your damage output and board control every turn for a low mana cost, giving your hero significant long-term advantages.
A 6/6 for 2 mana is extremely high-value, and over time they can overwhelm the board with their raw stats. Generally the only decks that can keep the Infernals under control are decks with lots of hard removal and freeze effects. On top of this, you gain a 3/8 weapon, which has enough durability to practically last the rest of the game and can be used to consistently deal damage to the enemy hero or remove weakened minions, as long as you have to health to afford it or heal back right after.
The main downside of Lord Jaraxxus is his high upfront mana cost. At 9 mana, there is very little you can follow up with after playing Jaraxxus, which make it difficult to play him in a disadvantaged board state. Therefore, Jaraxxus should be saved for when you're at a neutral or advantaged board state. Another major downside is your reduced max Health. At 15 health, you are much less likely to survive enemy swing turns or burst damage compared to 30. He is also vulnerable to weapon destruction from an Acidic Swamp Ooze or Harrison Jones - the latter which can either be a huge blessing if their hand is small or a curse if their hand is loaded or they're nearing Fatigue.
The state of the board is crucial when deciding the right time to play Jaraxxus. If the opponent has a selection of strong minions while the warlock has none, playing Jaraxxus may give them just the chance they need to finish the warlock off. However, if the board is empty or fairly evenly-balanced, the warlock need only hold their ground for a little while before Jaraxxus' powers lead them to victory. Cards like Twisting Nether are ideal for play in combination with Lord Jaraxxus, allowing the warlock to even the odds before tipping them substantially in their own favour. Jaraxxus is also generally less risky to play when the opponent's hand is small or empty. Jaraxxus is also better played when your deck is nearing Fatigue and Life Tap stops becoming useful.
One of Jaraxxus's issue is that he competes with other Hero Power replacing cards. He can be used to replace Tome of Origination if the mana discount becomes no longer relevant, and Galakrond's Malice as a last resort if you need minion quality over quantity. He's hopelessly outclassed by Bloodreaver Gul'dan, which grants board control and healing without halving your max health and a much more impactful Battlecry.

Lore
- Lord Jaraxxus is an eredar lord of the Burning Legion and the second encounter of the Trial of the Crusader raid instance. Lord Jaraxxus is accidentally summoned by Grand Warlock Wilfred Fizzlebang when the gnome attempts to summon a doomguard for the next challenge. Jaraxxus kills Fizzlebang for his efforts.
In Hearthstone lore, Lord Jaraxxus would later become mechanically augmented by Dr. Boom as Mecha-Jaraxxus with The Boomsday Project, although how and why this happened is unknown. Later, he goes to command the Rusted Legion in the Trial by Felfire adventure, but he's stopped by Illidan Stormrage and Aranna Starseeker.

Trivia
- The artwork for this card comes from the World of Warcraft Trading Card Game "The Hunt for Illidan" series, for the card Kurzon the False.
- Lord Jaraxxus was added fairly early in the game's initial development. At the time the game had two heroes for each class, one representing the Alliance and one representing the Horde, the Alliance warlock being Wilfred Fizzlebang. When a developer from the World of Warcraft team who was playtesting the game commented "I hope there's a Lord Jaraxxus card in this [Wilfred Fizzlebang] deck", Ben Brode realised "There should be a Jaraxxus card!" and set about designing the card. Given the Alliance warlock hero at the time of Jaraxxus' design, the card therefore originally had a good chance of being played by Fizzlebang, faithfully reenacting the classic scene where the gnome summons and is destroyed by the eredar lord.[16]
- Some of Lord Jaraxxus' soundbites from his appearance in World of Warcraft's Trial of the Crusader encounter have been reused for his emotes in Hearthstone.
- Previously, completing a game as Lord Jaraxxus would always grant warlock experience, even if the player was in fact playing another class (such as a priest acquiring Lord Jaraxxus using Thoughtsteal). However, this bug has now been fixed, and experience will always be granted to the player's selected class.
- Light's Champion, a minion released with The Grand Tournament, used to be able to silence a Lord Jaraxxus hero. This would allow Light's Champion to remove attack buffs from Jaraxxus, such as from Heroic Strike or Savage Combatant. Silencing Jaraxxus would also remove the Frozen status from Jaraxxus. In addition, a Jaraxxus hero set to 1 Health with Repentance would be restored to 15 Heath when silenced.[17] With the release of Patch 4.0.0.10833, Lord Jaraxxus can no longer be targeted by Light's Champion.
- Lord Jaraxxus' Battlecry is similar to the functionality of hero cards, a card type first introduced in the Knights of the Frozen Throne expansion. However, Jaraxxus was not reclassified from a minion to a hero card upon the release of Knights of the Frozen Throne due to some important differences in functionality; notably, Jaraxxus' Battlecry always sets the hero's Health to 15, whereas hero cards retain the hero's existing Health.[18][19] Furthermore, while hero cards are an entirely separate card type that can only enter the battlefield by being played from a player's hand, Lord Jaraxxus can enter play as a 3/15 minion through put into battlefield and random summon effects.
- Despite his fairly minor role in World of Warcraft, Jaraxxus became a popular figure in the community, due in part to several of his soundbites being featured in Mr.Voletron's "You FACE Jaraxxus" remix.
- Ben Brode has described Lord Jaraxxus as his #1, #2, #3, #4 and #5 favourite cards.[20] Lord Jaraxxus was also designed either primarily or entirely by Brode.[21] It still remains his favorite as of July 15, 2017.[22]
- Lord Jaraxxus' (presumably metaphorical) fist features as its own card.
- In World of Warcraft's Nighthold raid, players can loot the Golden Hearthstone Card: Lord Jaraxxus, a toy with the text "Use: Destroy your hero and replace it with Lord Jaraxxus." The toy's presence reflects the recursive relationship between the two games, with Lord Jaraxxus gaining a second wave of popularity as a Hearthstone card years after his original appearance as a World of Warcraft raid boss, with this second incarnation serving in turn to inspire a tribute item in the original game some 8 years later.
- Lord Jaraxxus apparently gets invited to parties at Karazhan frequently, in part because, unlike Prince Malchezaar, he is able to restrain himself from destroying the tower's various furniture.
- According to Medivh, Jaraxxus is apparently also an amazing karaoke singer.
- Since Hearthstone's launch, Lord Jaraxxus was infamous for his crippling weakness to Sacrificial Pact, which could also target and destroy the Lord Jaraxxus hero, reasoned by him "technically" being a Demon minion replacing the hero. This enabled warlocks to instantly win against Jaraxxus through a single card, and Zephrys the Great was even able to offer Sacrificial Pact to defeat an enemy Jaraxxus. In Ashes of Outland, Sacrificial Pact was nerfed so that it could only target friendly Demons, so Jaraxxus no longer has his notably humiliating weakness. However, a player controlling the Jaraxxus hero can still kill themself with Sacrificial Pact.
