Notes
- Something important to note about Lord Jaraxxus is that he works by somewhat different rules as compared to other 'proper' hero cards. Unlike hero cards, who were all introduced in later sets, Lord Jaraxxus when played and your hero transforms into Lord Jaraxxus, you gain no additional armor, nor does he have a battlecry effect since transforming your hero is Jaraxxus battle cry as compared to something innate to the type of card he is. As such your current and maximum Health are instantly set to 15 and your Armor is set to 0.[1] However like a regular hero card your Hero Power is replaced by INFERNO! (which allows you to summon a 6/6 Infernal every turn for 2 mana), your class is set to warlock, and you equip Blood Fury (a weapon with 3 Attack and 8 Durability). Note that Jaraxxus won't be able to attack immediately using Blood Fury, if the hero he replaced already attacked that turn.[2]
- The Lord Jaraxxus hero counts as a Demon for the purpose of Sacrificial Pact. This will kill Lord Jaraxxus instantly, so caution should be exercised before playing him in a warlock mirror match, against a priest with Thoughtsteal, a rogue with Burgle, or any player with Nefarian. However, other cards such as Mal'Ganis and Demonfuse do not count the Jaraxxus hero as a Demon, and will not affect him.
- Playing Lord Jaraxxus initially summons him as a minion, before his Battlecry transforms him into a hero who then takes over from the playing hero.
- Because of this, some effects that trigger when you summon a minion will affect him, such as Mirror Entity, which will summon a 3/15 Lord Jaraxxus minion for the opponent, albeit without any special text or abilities.
- However, Sword of Justice and Knife Juggler will not activate from playing Lord Jaraxxus.[3][4] This is likely both of because these effects activate from the resolution of Jaraxxus' summoning, which does not occur properly due to his becoming a hero partway through the process; similar to how Counterspell will prevent a Wild Pyromancer from activating.[5]
- Note that any effects which are triggered will activate in the normal sequence. In most cases, this means that they will activate after Jaraxxus becomes a hero, despite being designed to affect minions. For example, a Repentance will not reduce the Health of the Jaraxxus minion, but will activate once the hero has been turned into Jaraxxus, at which point the hero's maximum Health will be reduced to 1.[6][7]
- As a minion, Lord Jaraxxus cannot be played when the player's side of the battlefield is full (7 minions).[8]
- Once Jaraxxus has successfully become a hero, he no longer counts as a minion, and cannot be targeted with effects such as Demonfire or Rend Blackhand's Battlecry.[9]
- Because of this, some effects that trigger when you summon a minion will affect him, such as Mirror Entity, which will summon a 3/15 Lord Jaraxxus minion for the opponent, albeit without any special text or abilities.
- The Lord Jaraxxus minion can be put into play without activating its Battlecry through put into battlefield effects such as Voidcaller, Mindgames, or Dirty Rat. A Lord Jaraxxus minion can also be summoned through Bane of Doom.
- When Lord Jaraxxus becomes a hero, he is considered to replace the previous hero. As a result, any modifiers affecting the previous hero will not be transferred. This includes Armor and the Frozen state.[11] However, less specific effects such as Millhouse Manastorm and Loatheb affect the enemy player regardless of their current hero, and will not be cancelled by playing Jaraxxus.[12][13]
- Lord Jaraxxus is a warlock hero and will interact with cards like Nefarian and Swashburglar accordingly. However, at the end of the match the player will still gain experience and ranked wins for the class with which they started the match.
- When playing Lord Jaraxxus while equipped with a Charged Hammer, the Deathrattle of Charged Hammer will replace INFERNO! with Lightning Jolt.[14]
- A 1/1 copy of Lord Jaraxxus created by Shadowcaster will still replace your Hero with the 15 Health version of Lord Jaraxxus and replace your weapon as normal.[15]
- Lord Jaraxxus' Health can be raised to 40 upon playing Amara, Warden of Hope. This can be done if a Priest manages to get a copy of Lord Jaraxxus from random effects such as Mind Vision, Kabal Courier, or Shadow Oil from a Kazakus potion.
- Brann Bronzebeard triggers the Battlecry twice, but this will not have any special consequence other than seeing the animation twice.[16]
Strategy
Lord Jaraxxus is best played when you have less than 15 Health so you regain some Health. The new ability to summon 6/6 Infernals, in addition to Blood Fury, will increase your damage output every turn for a low mana cost, making it a good addition to any warlock deck.
Once Jaraxxus is played, the warlock assumes a vastly improved position - with the possible exception of their Health. The new Hero Power and weapon empower the warlock greatly, and will likely lead them to defeat their opponent within a short time. The main downside to playing Lord Jaraxxus - provided the warlock's Health is already below 15 - is the mana cost. This prevents most other actions that round, giving the opponent the advantage.
The increased power of Jaraxxus means that in most cases, the warlock will go on to win the game if their opponent does not defeat them in the space of a few rounds. The ability to generate 6/6 Infernals each round, as well as the use of a substantial weapon, all in addition to the warlock's normal card play, tends to present an insurmountable advantage for the opponent to overcome, and almost guarantees control of the board within a few rounds. This generally leaves a short window in which the opponent has a reasonable chance of destroying the warlock before their victory is assured. Exceptions to this state of affairs include mage Freeze/spell decks, which may be capable of finishing the warlock regardless of the state of the board.
The state of the board is crucial when deciding the right time to play Jaraxxus. If the opponent has a selection of strong minions while the warlock has none, playing Jaraxxus may give them just the chance they need to finish the warlock off. However, if the board is empty or fairly evenly-balanced, the warlock need only hold their ground for a little while before Jaraxxus' powers lead them to victory. Cards like Twisting Nether are ideal for play in combination with Lord Jaraxxus, allowing the warlock to even the odds before tipping them substantially in their own favour. Jaraxxus is also generally less risky to play when the opponent's hand is small or empty.
A common strategy with Handlock decks involves taking a lot of damage in order to summon Molten Giants, and then using Lord Jaraxxus to heal back to 15. Note though that the maximum Health of your hero will be set to 15 once you replace it with Lord Jaraxxus, meaning that summoning Molten Giant will cost more mana when Jaraxxus is at 15 Health (no cost reduction for Molten Giant) than when a warlock is at 15 Health (cost reduction of 15). This also means that it is not possible to heal Lord Jaraxxus above 15 Health.
Counters
- Mirror Entity: Summons a 3/15 Lord Jaraxxus minion
- Sacrificial Pact: Destroys Jaraxxus
- Harrison Jones / Acidic Swamp Ooze / Gluttonous Ooze: Destroys Blood Fury
- Extremely rarely, the Deathrattle of a minion belonging to the opponent can interfere with Jaraxxus' Battlecry process. This can happen if playing Lord Jaraxxus triggers Illidan Stormrage, summoning a Flame of Azzinoth, which in turn triggers a Knife Juggler, whose knife then kills one of the opponent's minions.
- The Deathrattle of Sylvanas Windrunner can steal the Lord Jaraxxus minion before its Battlecry is triggered, causing the other player to become Jaraxxus.[17]
- The Deathrattle of Abomination, Explosive Sheep and similar minions can destroy the Lord Jaraxxus minion before it can replace the player's hero.
- Using a Sideshow Spelleater can copy the Hero Power of Jaraxxus. When used the turn after Jaraxxus is played, you can have an Infernal on your side before the opponent does, neutralizing, to some extent, the Hero Power advantage.
Blood Fury
Blood Fury has high durability and decent damage output, so you should be attacking with it every turn, unless your opponent has a minion with taunt out that can deal enough damage to Lord Jaraxxus to be problematic. This weapon can be very useful for removal, preventing your opponent from building an offensive force, but beware Jaraxxus' low health.
INFERNO!
INFERNO! is the most powerful Hero Power in the game, summoning a fresh 6/6 Infernal each round for only 2 mana. Warlocks will generally want to use this as often as possible, allowing them to swarm the board with an army of powerful minions. Regular use of this often forces the opponent to use all their removal and defensive options simply to survive.
Warlocks can use Sacrificial Pact on their own Infernals summoned by INFERNO! to restore 5 Health to themselves. Ideally, this would be used on a damaged or weakened Infernal, and one that is already exhausted.

Lore
- Lord Jaraxxus is an eredar lord of the Burning Legion and the second encounter of the Trial of the Crusader raid instance. Lord Jaraxxus is accidentally summoned by Grand Warlock Wilfred Fizzlebang when the gnome attempts to summon a doomguard for the next challenge. Jaraxxus kills Fizzlebang for his efforts.
In Hearthstone lore, Lord Jaraxxus would later become mechanically augmented by Dr. Boom as Mecha-Jaraxxus with The Boomsday Project, although how and why this happened is unknown.

Trivia
- The artwork for this card comes from the World of Warcraft Trading Card Game "The Hunt for Illidan" series, for the card Kurzon the False.
- Lord Jaraxxus was added fairly early in the game's initial development. At the time the game had two heroes for each class, one representing the Alliance and one representing the Horde, the Alliance warlock being Wilfred Fizzlebang. When a developer from the World of Warcraft team who was playtesting the game commented "I hope there's a Lord Jaraxxus card in this [Wilfred Fizzlebang] deck", Ben Brode realised "There should be a Jaraxxus card!" and set about designing the card. Given the Alliance warlock hero at the time of Jaraxxus' design, the card therefore originally had a good chance of being played by Fizzlebang, faithfully reenacting the classic scene where the gnome summons and is destroyed by the eredar lord.[18]
- Some of Lord Jaraxxus' soundbites from his appearance in World of Warcraft's Trial of the Crusader encounter have been reused for his emotes in Hearthstone.
- Previously, completing a game as Lord Jaraxxus would always grant warlock experience, even if the player was in fact playing another class (such as a priest acquiring Lord Jaraxxus using Thoughtsteal). However, this bug has now been fixed, and experience will always be granted to the player's selected class.
- Light's Champion, a minion released with The Grand Tournament, used to be able to silence a Lord Jaraxxus hero. This would allow Light's Champion to remove attack buffs from Jaraxxus, such as from Heroic Strike or Savage Combatant. Silencing Jaraxxus would also remove the Frozen status from Jaraxxus. In addition, a Jaraxxus hero set to 1 Health with Repentance would be restored to 15 Heath when silenced.[19] With the release of Patch 4.0.0.10833, Lord Jaraxxus can no longer be targeted by Light's Champion.
- Despite his fairly minor role in World of Warcraft, Jaraxxus became a popular figure in the community, due in part to several of his soundbites being featured in Mr.Voletron's "You FACE Jaraxxus" remix.
- Ben Brode has described Lord Jaraxxus as his #1, #2, #3, #4 and #5 favourite cards.[20] Lord Jaraxxus was also designed either primarily or entirely by Brode.[21] It still remains his favorite as of July 15, 2017.[22]
- Lord Jaraxxus (presumably metaphorical) fist features as its own card.
- In World of Warcraft's Nighthold raid, players can loot the Golden Hearthstone Card: Lord Jaraxxus, a toy with the text "Use: Destroy your hero and replace it with Lord Jaraxxus." The toy's presence reflects the recursive relationship between the two games, with Lord Jaraxxus gaining a second wave of popularity as a Hearthstone card years after his original appearance as a World of Warcraft raid boss, with this second incarnation serving in turn to inspire a tribute item in the original game some 8 years later.
- Lord Jaraxxus apparently gets invited to parties at Karazhan frequently, in part because, unlike Prince Malchezaar, he is able to restrain himself from destroying the tower's various furniture.
- According to Medivh, Jaraxxus is apparently also an amazing karaoke singer.
