"How did you convince me to do this?" - Ben Brode

"Un'Goro: The Journey" is the title of a rap by Game Director Ben Brode, released March 1, 2017.

History[edit | edit source]

With the announcement of Journey to Un'Goro in February 2017, players were quick to notice that the expansion's trailer lacked a song, as had become traditional from previous releases. In fact, Un'Goro was the first Hearthstone content release ever to not include a song in its cinematic trailer; while those for Curse of Naxxramas and Whispers of the Old Gods were spoken rather than sung, like all other trailers up to that point they featured a strong musical form, including rhyming words. In contrast, while the Journey to Un'Goro trailer had a drifting musical score in the background, the words were not rhyming or spoken in time to the score.

The lack of a song in the trailer led to a player-created thread on reddit entitled "Petition to make Ben Brode sing a song because we didn't get a musical trailer this time." The thread gained more than 5,000 upvotes in the first 24 hours after the trailer's release.[1]

On the very next day, Brode released "Un'Goro: The Journey", a video featuring himself rapping, on his personal YouTube channel.[2][3] In the rap Brode explains his decision to respond to the reddit post; describes the various threats awaiting within Un'Goro; and encourages players to explore Elemental-based decks as well as the new Quest cards.

Within a few hours the rap's reddit post had become the all-time most upvoted post on /r/Hearthstone,[4][5] and soon the number one post on all of reddit at that time.[6] The rap quickly saw a number of remixes from community members, setting Brode's voice to music ranging from hip hop and synthpop to the internet phenomenon "We Are Number One" and even tech metal, as well as overlaying Brode's rap over the original cinematic.

Notes[edit | edit source]

  • Brode composed, performed and recorded the rap himself without assistance from other team members,[7] taking him about 90 minutes to write.[8]

Lyrics[edit | edit source]

'ey there, don't be scared
my name is Ben Brode
I read a thread on reddit
and it said that
I should sing an ode
our cinematic didn't have a song
nothing to bump your head to
nothing to sing along, well
I don't know
I don't think that was wrong
but I went home anyway
and wrote this song
Un'Goro Crater
is coming
sooner than later
Elise is not gonna wait
her scouts are aimin' for haters, yo
this land is dangerous
how can I explain to this
lemme just say it's not famous
for being painless!
even the plants
won't you give you half a chance
pick up the wrong flower?
there goes your hands
and that's not all
the elementals are callin'
and if you put 'em all in?
you gonn' be ballin'!
I see you look at it
don't be afraid of it
if Magma Rager's your favorite
it's time to savor it!
yo yo yo the junior explorers
headin' to the forest
mappin' it for us
look out!
dinosaurs about!
everybody shouts as we head into the chorus!
Journey to Un'Goro!
(How did you convince me to do this?)
Journey to Un'Goro!
if I had just one request
one thing you'd do at my behest
honestly I think it would be the best
if you would take a look at the legendary quests
ooh they cost one mana
and they start in your hand and
they enter play when you slam 'em
but be careful in playin' em
the rewards are huge
but only if your deck has a certain point of view
a thing you're trying to do
if you build it wrong
you take too long
you'll never get your questin' on
but that's fine, this set has a lot more
that's right: it's got a ton of dinosaurs!
but these ain't your normal dinos
something is cracked
energy from around the crater's causing them to adapt
you want
flaming claws
poisonous maws
shrouding mists or
lighting fists
doesn't matter, soon you'll be splatted in the ground
dinosaurs ain't happy 'bout newcomers in town
Journey to Un'Goro!
(Okay, this was a mistake)
Journey to Un'Goro!
(I'm gonna turn this off before I get fired...)
