The twilight whelps are basically magic-vampires. Despite this, they are not a reference to any popular series of novels.
Twilight Whelp is a common priest minion card, from the Blackrock Mountain set.
How to get
Two copies of regular Twilight Whelp are obtained by completing the priest Class Challenge in Blackrock Mountain, unlocked upon completing the Blackrock Spire wing.
As a Wild-format card, both regular and golden versions of Twilight Whelp can also be crafted for the following amounts:

Strategy
A strong early card as long as the priest has a Dragon in their hand. A good early game option for Dragon decks. As a Dragon it can itself be used to trigger other Dragon-related cards like Blackwing Technician. It can be used as a replacement for 
Zombie Chow in a Dragon deck without 
Auchenai Soulpriest, or in addition to Zombie Chow in order to provide a much stronger early game than Chows alone. Furthermore, it is a great target for priest spells such as 
Extra Arms or 
Velen's Chosen.
