Tortollan Forager full

The tortollans are a race of primitive but friendly turtle-like humanoids native to Un'Goro Crater, first introduced in the Journey to Un'Goro expansion.

Lore[]

One of Professor Doyle's notes remarks that if he can bring back proof of this rumored race of crater-dwellers, his name will rank among Azeroth's greatest explorers.[1] When Doyle and his assistant Eddie Malone were captured by a group of saurok in an Un'Goro swamp, they were rescued by the tortollans. The tribe leader, Umbra, guided them to a nearby murloc village and re-appeared a few days later to direct them towards the Journey to Un'GoroVolcano at the heart of Un'Goro, where she told them to climb the 'fire mountain' to see 'the truth'.[2]

The tortollans' name and appearance may hint at a connection to the turtle Wild God Tortolla, whom they apparently revere or worship.

After being introduced in Hearthstone, the tortollans would go on to appear in World of Warcraft with the Battle for Azeroth expansion.

Trivia[]

Journey to Un'Goro concept art 10

"This sketch shows what a shaman and brute might look like in their culture. Fish as a weapon?! They . . . aren’t very clever."[3]

  • While Hearthstone has previously introduced various new creature types and variations of existing species to the Warcraft universe, such as many of the Mechs from Goblins vs Gnomes and the ethereal "energy-camel" ridden by The Grand TournamentNexus-Champion Saraad, the tortollans represent the very first time that a never-before-seen intelligent humanoid race has been introduced through Hearthstone.
  • Senior Concept Artist Jerry Mascho describes the creation of the tortollans as follows: "The designers wanted us to explore the idea of a tribal group and we thought it would be fun to introduce a new race based on some ancient turtle creatures. So, the Tortollans were born."[3]
