Strategy[edit | edit source]
A superior version of the mage's Arcane Explosion. The boardwide damage effect is even better on a Shaman, as they have easier access (albeit mostly random) to Spell Damage bonuses via the Wrath of Air Totem. The additional 1-cost minion is also a big nuisance for enemies.
Maelstrom Portal is a great early-game play and stifles aggressive enemies, but with Spell Damage it can create a huge tempo swing late-game as well. Against pure control decks, it can be used at will simply to summon a minion.

Battlecry: Restore 2 Health. Voodoo is an oft-misunderstood art. But it is art.
Battlecry: Give a minion +2 Attack this turn. ADD ME TO YOUR DECK, MAGGOT!
Battlecry: Give a friendly minion +1 Attack. This is my Runeblade. There are many like it but this one is mine.
Deathrattle: Add two 1/1 Squirrels to your hand. You'd be nuts to mess with the squirrel squad.
Can't be targeted by spells or Hero Powers. Makes a mean puff pastry.
Battlecry: Summon a 1/1 Cat. To be a cool cat in Gadgetzan, you gotta have bling.
After you play a minion, deal 1 damage to it. He'd be a lot easier to animate if he would just stand still.
Whenever you cast a spell, give this minion +1 Health. He used to get work as a Spatial Anomaly, but he got tired of having his polarity reversed.
Whenever you cast a spell, gain Armor equal to its Cost. Ethereal armor dissipates in 6 hours which can cause extreme awkwardness for first time buyers.

Combo: Gain +1/+1. He has a poor understanding of the law of diminishing returns.
Stealth. At the end of your turn, give another random friendly minion +1 Health. Imps are content to hide and viciously taunt everyone nearby.
Inspire: If your hand is empty, deal 2 damage to the enemy hero. This is a "bearly" concealed reference.
Whenever you equip a weapon, give it +1 Attack. The best part of buccaneering is the pants.
Divine Shield Her suit was fitted using a scale model.
Deathrattle: Add a Spare Part card to your hand. Clockwork gnomes are always asking what time it is.
Has +2 Attack while you have a Mech. After a while, you don't see the cogs and sprockets. All you see is a robot, a spider tank, a deathray...
Battlecry: Your next Hero Power this turn deals 2 more damage. A few hours later he DESTROYED the arena bathrooms.
Lifesteal His favorite spell is Chum Explosion.

Battlecry: Freeze an enemy. Ice, ice, baby!
Magnetic They tried for weeks to make a stealth version, but eventually decided to just let it glow.
Deathrattle: Deal 2 damage to the enemy hero. They're Dr. Boom's babies. His baby boomers.
Battlecry: Give a random Murloc in your hand +1/+1. Listen, see? We'll take 'em to the docks, see? And throw 'em in the sea, see?
Overkill: Gain +5 Attack. “Ya hold it by da feet, mon. Den ya THROW.”
Deathrattle: Reduce the Cost of a Beast in your hand by (1). It can’t be all that helpful. Not wif dose widdle wings!
Battlecry: Add a random Beast to your hand. It’s not LITERALLY jeweled. The goblins were terribly disappointed.
Battlecry: The next Secret you play this turn costs (0). I'll tell you one thing he doesn't lack: GUMPTION.
Battlecry: Draw a card. Deal 2 damage to your hero. Kobolds sort books using a gooey decimal system.
Deathrattle: Deal 2 damage to the enemy hero. He really just wants to be your friend, but the constant rejection is starting to really get to him.
Inspire: Gain +1 Attack. But not the lowliest!
Whenever you discard a card, draw a card. Malchezaar used to have an imp named Dobby working for him, but there was a tragic accident.
Deathrattle: Summon a 1/1 Jo-E Bot. Its project name was KAN-GA. The little one was R-00.

Deathrattle: Draw a card. Oh man! Runic omelettes are the best!
Battlecry: Destroy a friendly minion and gain +2/+2. Have some! This drink is to die for!
Deathrattle: Summon a 0/3 Free Agent with Taunt for your opponent. Don't even think of asking for time off.
Taunt Have you seen the size of the shields in this game?? This is no easy job.

Has Charge while you have a weapon equipped. Pirates are into this new fad called "Planking".
Battlecry: Add a 1/1 Lynx with Rush to your hand. The terrible thing about lynxes is lynxes are terrible things. Their teeth are made out of biting, their paws are made out of springs!

Taunt He was so excited to get season tickets to this year's Grand Tournament. He normally doesn't get them at first and has to buy them from Ogre scalpers.
Battlecry: Give a friendly Murloc Poisonous. I'm addicted to him, but I know that he's Toxfin.
Whenever you Overload, gain +1 Attack per locked Mana Crystal. Sure, they're ugly, but they live in tunnels. You try your beauty routine without natural light.
Battlecry: If you're holding a Dragon, gain +2 Health. The twilight whelps are basically magic-vampires. Despite this, they are not a reference to any popular series of novels.
Whenever you summon a minion with Deathrattle, gain +1 Attack. In a world where you can run to a spirit healer and resurrect yourself, Undertakers do pretty light business.
Has +1 Attack while damaged. Mass production of warbots was halted when it was discovered that they were accidentally being produced at "sample size."
Battlecry: If you played 2 spells this turn, deal 2 damage. “Does she cause them with magic, or just…like have a bucket she brings with her?”
Divine Shield Takes double damage from wick-based weapons
Deathrattle: Add a random Beast card to your hand. Spider cocoons are like little piñatas!
Battlecry: Add a random Shaman spell to your hand. Is she a frog that became a witch, or a witch that became a frog?
Deathrattle: Give a random friendly minion +2 Health. THIS wood imp. Stop asking!
Stealth If you want to stop a worgen from infiltrating, just yell, "No! Bad boy!"
Whenever this minion attacks, deal 2 damage to the enemy hero. If you ever tried to plow permafrost, you’d be wretched, too.
Windfury They were the inspiration for the championship Taurenball team: The Dragonhawks.
Deathrattle: Give a random friendly minion +1/+1. Ok, Initiate. You need to settle down and do your job. In this case, that means die so someone else can get a minor buff.
Deathrattle: Restore 5 Health to the enemy hero. Zombie. It's what's for dinner.
Has +5 Attack while damaged. There is no beast more frightening (or ridiculous) than a fully enraged chicken.
Battlecry: Add a random Mage spell to your hand. His idol is the Green Hills of Stranglethorn, and he won't shut up about it.
Battlecry: Remove 1 Durability from your opponent's weapon. Every pirate uses the same four digits to access Automated Gold Dispensers. It's called the "Pirate's Code".
Deathrattle: Copy a card from your opponent's deck and add it to your hand. Being made of light has its disadvantages, but at least it's always looking on the bright side.
Whenever this minion takes damage, summon a 2/1 Whelp. Think of them as bullets for your dragon gun.
After this minion attacks a hero, add a copy of it to your hand. It's certainly not civilized gibbering.
Battlecry: Summon a random 1-Cost minion for your opponent. The mole of La Mancha rides again!

Battlecry: Deal 3 damage to each hero. Shadowbomber does her job, but she's kind of phoning it in at this point.

This spell represents one of Karazhan's many "precisely calibrated portals attuned to a variety of exotic locales" - in this case, the Maelstrom, the former location of the Well of Eternity before it was destroyed in the Great Sundering. During the Black Empire, it was also the location of Y'Shaarj, the most powerful of the Old Gods.
In World of Warcraft[edit | edit source]
Following Deathwing's reemergence into Azeroth, heroes of the Alliance and the Horde travelled to the Maelstrom to assist Thrall in attempting to seal the rift between Deepholm and Azeroth. A portal to the Maelstrom was briefly to be found in the capital cities; after journeying to Deepholm the portals were redirected there.
The Maelstrom[edit | edit source]
- The Maelstrom is the gigantic rift that was created when the Well of Eternity collapsed into itself during the Great Sundering. Located in the middle of the Great Sea - which the Great Sundering created - the Maelstrom appears as a massive, fierce vortex of water.
