Notes
To edit these notes, go to Template:Mad Scientist notes.
Mad Scientist's Deathrattle will place a random Secret from your unused deck into play, removing the card from your deck.[1] However, it will not choose a Secret that you currently already have active, as it is not possible to have multiples of the same Secret activate at any time.[2]
- If there are no Secrets remaining in your deck, or all remaining Secrets are copies of those already active, the Mad Scientist will not place any new Secret into play.[3]
- The drawn Secret is not directly revealed to the controlling player, but can be checked by mousing over the Secret icon on the hero's portrait. The Secret is not revealed to the opponent.
- Mad Scientist's put into battlefield effect will not activate triggered effects which trigger from Secrets being 'played' or 'cast', such as Mana Wyrm, Secretkeeper or Fel Reaver.
- A secret like Mirror Entity put into play by Mad Scientist's Deathrattle after it has been killed by a minion's Battlecry (or Combo / Choose One effect) WILL trigger in the subsequent After Play Phase and affect the played minion. For example, if a rogue uses an SI:7 Agent to kill a Mad Scientist, whose Deathrattle puts Mirror Entity into play, then the Mirror Entity will copy the SI:7 Agent. This is due to the specific order that Battlecries, deaths/on-death triggers and After Play Phase triggers resolve. for more information see the Advanced rulebook. It seems that for now (as of Patch 5.0.0.12574 (WotOG patch)), the behaviour is intended.[4]
- If a Mad Scientist's Deathrattle puts into play a secret which triggers from death (e.g., Duplicate, Redemption or Avenge), the secret will not trigger on the Scientist's Death Event.[5][6] This is because when we start resolving a Death Event (like the Mad Scientist's Death Event), we queue all related on-death triggers then resolve them. An on-death trigger that becomes eligible after this queue is populated is too late to join it.
- If a Mad Scientist dies at the same moment as another minion, which entered play after the Scientist, and the Scientist puts into play a secret which triggers from minion death (e.g., Duplicate or Redemption) the secret will not trigger from the Scientist's death, but will trigger from the next minion's death.[7] This is because Death Events are resolved in play order, and each one queues all on-death triggers that are eligible when it begins to resolve. (This means that Mad Scientist pulling an on-death Secret can't have it trigger on a minion played before the Scientist or on itself.)
- When a Secret triggers, it immediately leaves play, meaning that a Mad Scientist Deathrattle can immediately put another copy of that Secret into play. This can allow you to resolve two Avenges in the same Death Phase, for example.
Known bugs[]
As of January 2015, a known bug[8] allows Mad Scientist's Deathrattle to cause the player to exceed the 5 secret limit.[9][10] Mad Scientist still will not act upon duplicates of currently active secrets, but will put additional different secrets into play if available in the player's deck, essentially ignoring the 5 secret limit. This has been shown to allow at least 11 different secrets to be active on a hero at the same time. Secrets beyond the 5 limit will activate and take effect normally, and in the correct order.[11]

Lore[]
Mad Scientists are mad scientists found in Naxxramas.
- While "mad scientists", often referred as doctors, can come in any race and certainly are not exclusive to the Forsaken and Scourge, the undead do have their own specific kind of mad scientist, typically male Forsaken alchemists who utilizes their on own strain of chemicals from tanks strapped to their backs. While some work with Sylvanas to create an even deadlier plague, several are in the employ of the Lich King or the Shadow Council.
Trivia[]
- The artwork for this card comes from the World of Warcraft Trading Card Game "Dungeon Decks 2011 Treasure" series, for the card Forsaken Blightspreader.

- ↑ Tested by User:Taohinton, 2015-02-16. Mad Scientist's Deathrattle put Duplicate into play; did not activate from his death. Exactly the same with Redemption and Avenge.

- ↑ Tested by User:Taohinton 2015-02-07. Tried both Duplicate and Redemption; in both cases Mad Scientist will cause the next simultaneous death to trigger the secret, but will not trigger it himself. Simultaneous deaths of earlier minions were found not to activate the secret, presumably because they are resolved before the Scientist's death.
