Notes[edit | edit source]

  • The Nether Portal summoned by the spell Nether Portal (which is generated by Lakkari Sacrifice) summons two 3/2 Nether Imps on the left and right sides of the Nether Portal minion, at the end of each turn of the controlling player.
  • The Nether Portal is a Permanent, meaning that it is untargetable and immune to all external effects. For details, see Permanent.
  • The Lakkari Sacrifice quest progress only counts successful discards, meaning that activating a discard effect while having an empty hand will not count towards the quest.[1]
  • Quest rewards are added to the hand after the phase in which they were completed.
    • Therefore, it's impossible to discard the Nether Portal due to a single effect that discards two cards.
Example: Doomguard is played with this Quest at 5/6 progress. Doomguard discards two cards from those already in hand, then Nether Portal is added to the hand.
  • This, like other Quests, can complete yet fail to generate its reward, if the player's hand is full at the time. In that case, there would be no further opportunity to complete that Quest.
Example: Soulfire is played with this Quest at 5/6 progress, 9 other cards in hand, and two Malchezaar's Imps in play. During the "spell effects" phase of casting, a card is discarded, then the Imps trigger, drawing two cards total, for a total of 10 cards in hand. The Quest completes at the end of this phase, but Nether Portal cannot be added to the hand. That Quest cannot be completed again.

Strategy[edit | edit source]

This quest is rather difficult to fulfill because it requires you to amass a huge number of cards. As of Journey to Un'Goro, the only discard-effects in the game are Battlecries and Soulfire. This means that in addition to the six cards you have to discard, you will need between three and six other cards that actually discard them. This means that you need nine to twelve cards in order to fulfill this quest, which is the most of all Un'Goro quests. By topdecking, amassing this many cards takes seven to ten turns (minus one if you go second). Most discard decks don't last that long. Luckily, warlocks are not reliant on topdecks alone. Their hero power can accelerate the drawing process, though it costs mana and, thus, valuable time.

With Howlfiend, it accelerates the progress on the quest as taking damage with discard cards but it may discard Nether Portal in the process if howlfiend is taken multiple hits at once.

Another big problem with completing this quest is, obviously, that it requires you throw away valuable cards. This means that you are almost officially required to play any card that is related to discard, otherwise you are likely to be outgunned by your opponent. Cruel Dinomancer and Silverware Golem are easy picks. The biggest assets to completing this quest, however, are Malchezaar's Imp and Clutchmother Zavas, as they completely eliminate the downside of discard while also reducing the number of cards (and thus the time) needed to complete the quest.

The reward for this daunting quest is incredibly strong, but it may be argued that, without the Imps and the Clutchmother, completing the quest in a timely fashion is nigh impossible. Committing to the Lakkari Sacrifice means committing to craft the Imps and the Clutchmother.

Despite all that, the ultimate reward is extremely powerful. Once the Nether Portal is in play, there's nothing your opponent can do about it. The portal cannot be interacted with by them, meaning it will endlessly spawn 3/2 minions until the game ends. The 3/2s can be used to cheaply and securely maintain board control by trading into your opponent's minions for free. They can also be used to put on pressure, amassing an extra 6 damage to the opponent's Hero each turn, and growing in size if not dealt with. The portal itself does take up a spot on the board, limiting you to 6 minions total, and it constantly spawns in minions, but that shouldn't be a problem for Control and Handlock decks where minions numbers aren't as important.

Lore[edit | edit source]

From Wowpedia:

The Lakkari Tar Pits are, as the name implies, tar pits found in northern Un'Goro Crater, just below Marshal's Refuge. Flowers, Tarblossoms grow at the bottom of these pits, which have gone unnoticed for a long time. Tar beasts live in the area among several giant bones of creatures that got stuck here.
