Bloodmage Thalnos is generally considered to be an excellent card. Not only is he great in a Spell Damage deck, but his Deathrattle and low cost make him a great card to have out early, even if he dies. The disadvantage of Bloodmage Thalnos is his weak stats. As a 1/1 for 2 mana he is susceptible to any form of direct or indirect damage, although his Deathrattle may make up for this somewhat.

Lore
Bloodmage Thalnos was a level 31 elite skeleton mini-boss found in the Graveyard of the Scarlet Monastery instance. With the revamp of the dungeon for Mists of Pandaria, he was renamed Thalnos the Soulrender, and generally overhauled.
Thalnos' origins are disputed. His title appears to suggest he was a blood elf in life, although some say the lore is hard-pressed to explain the presence of a blood elf in the monastery at that time, and that he was more likely a human. The original version used mostly Fire spells to deal damage, while the new version uses necromantic Shadow magic, raising fallen crusaders to his aid and ripping the very souls from his enemies.
Thalnos' summoning and attack quotes in Hearthstone are his aggro and killing a player quotes from World of Warcraft, respectively.
From the Dungeon Journal:
- "Thalnos earned repute in the Scarlet Crusade for the brutal torture methods he used to "purify" new recruits. Ultimately the sadistic mage contracted the plague of undeath and arose as a fearsome skeletal being. The vengeful Thalnos now prowls the monastery's graveyard commanding apparitions and zombified creatures to attack anyone who trespasses on his unholy domain."
Trivia
- The artwork for this card comes from the World of Warcraft Trading Card Game "Icecrown" series, for the card Turov the Risen.
- Bloodmage Thalnos' entrance music is taken from Graveyard.
