Starting board[edit | edit source]
Prince Malchezaar starts with 5 Mana Crystals, meaning he has 6 available on his first turn.
Strategy[edit | edit source]
Normal[edit | edit source]
Prince Malchezaar starts with a hefty Mana bonus and will prioritise abusing his hero power, summoning 6/6 Abyssals nearly every turn. Despite this, Medivh has a massive and versatile suite of spells, allowing him to stall out the game and begin fighting back with ease once he gains enough mana.
One of the most key cards in this encounter is Archmage's Apprentice. With this card on the board every friendly spell cast gets copied back into the deck, allowing the player to unleash a flurry of spells without running out of cards - especially in combination with the Hero Power Brilliance. It also combos well with Evocation and Archmage's Insight, allowing you to play a lot of spells the same turn you summon the Apprentice.
A single use of Arcane Power will boost Arcane Explosion's damage to 6, allowing it to clear the board of most of Malchezaar's minions.
If you are lucky enough to summon Archmage Antonidas from Astral Portal, playing Archmage's Insight during the same turn will effectively result in an instant win. Since every spell will cost zero mana for the rest of the turn, and because every spell cast will add a Fireball to your hand (including Fireball itself), you can simply take your time to repeatedly cast Fireball on Prince Malchezaar until his health is depleted.
Heroic[edit | edit source]
Prince Malchezaar has an effective 120 health-pool in the Heroic fight, making it crucial to use Medivh's spells sparingly. You will also need to use your Archmage's Apprentices to generate more cards, or else you will run out of spells to finish the battle.
Mysterious Rune is very likely to play Ice Block and/or Ice Barrier, which can help you stall until you can assemble a combo.

Lore[edit | edit source]
Prince Malchezaar is a corrupted eredar and prince of the Burning Legion. He is encountered by Medivh during the adventure's first wing, The Prologue.
In World of Warcraft[edit | edit source]
- "You face not Malchezaar alone, but the legions I command!"
From Wowpedia:
- Prince Malchezaar is a raid boss located at the very top of Karazhan. He can be encountered after the Chess event and controls all of the trash between the Game Room and Netherspace.
- Little is known about Malchezaar, except that he is a man'ari eredar, he claims to be a prince, and he is a member of the Burning Legion. It is unknown how or when he arrived at Karazhan or what his purpose there is. He apparently arrived while some agents of the Violet Eye were still alive inside Karazhan, notably Keanna. It was likely shortly before Karazhan was sealed, as the Violet Eye were aware of Keanna's death.
Trivia[edit | edit source]
- During the fight, Medivh mentions that he invited Lord Jaraxxus to Karazhan due to Jaraxxus's karaoke being "amazing". This may be a reference to MrVoletron's popular remix "You FACE Jaraxxus", which consists of many of Jaraxxus's soundbites from World of Warcraft.
- Incidentally, Malchezaar's Hero Power works stat-identically to Jaraxxus's INFERNO!, summoning a 6/6 Demon for 2 mana.
- Aside from the fairly non-descript Mine Cart from The League of Explorers' Temple Escape, this is the first adventure mission to feature a playable hero that is not available in any other game mode or adventure encounter in Hearthstone.
- When asked whether the Archmage's Apprentice card featured in this encounter represented a young Khadgar, Ben Brode replied "perhaps".[1]
- If Astral Portal summons Wilfred Fizzlebang, his ability will work with Medivh's Hero Power. This was likely explicitly designed, as his ability doesn't work with any Tavern Brawl-exclusive Hero Powers that draw cards.
- Brilliance can be upgraded by Justicar Trueheart, but the resulting Hero Power is identical. This may be an intentional workaround since the Hero Power is technically Medivh's "starting Hero Power".
