Strategy

Big Game Hunter is a unique card in its ability to destroy an opposing minion for such a low price. The alternative is a 4/2 for 3, which is also acceptable, especially if your opponent is utilising low-power and high-health early-game minions.

The deck that gets the most advantage out of Big Game Hunter are those that can utilise its ability, and itself as a minion. For this reason, it is not advisable to put this card in decks that aim to end the game early - as if your opponent has a 7 power minion it's unlikely that the game is going in your favour. Alternatively, it's also unadvisable to include this card in a deck if the class you are playing can easily deal with large creatures. For instance, warlocks can use LegacySiphon Soul to destroy opposing minions, and rogues can use LegacyAssassinate.

That leaves the decks the card is good in; such as mage and shaman decks that aim to destroy opposing minions using LegacyFlamestrike, LegacyLightning Bolt, etc. that may not be able to destroy large minions. Those classes get LegacyPolymorph and LegacyHex respectively - but at that point it comes down to personal preference. A deck that is full of ways to remove small creatures would greatly appreciate a card such as Big Game Hunter to be an inexpensive answer to a very large creature - For example, being able to cast Flamestrike on the same turn as Big Game Hunter can be very useful.

Additionally, this card's unique Battlecry can be used with other cards or minions that increase an enemy minion attack. For example, the player can play LegacyCruel Taskmaster or LegacyDark Iron Dwarf and grant an enemy minion +2 attack, allowing the Big Game Hunter to destroy the buffed minion.

Lore

This card refers to a series of quests from World of Warcraft, where the player is tasked by Hemet Nesingwary with hunting down rare or elusive animals. Since then, this neutral faction of beast hunters has made its way to the new lands unveiled with each expansion in order to hunt the dangerous beasts found there, while offering quests to players to do the same.

In the classic game, there were quests in Stranglethorn to hunt dangerous wild beasts for sport. They eventually chained to an elite boss tiger, that was difficult to solo at the time. In The Burning Crusade, a camp was introduced in Nagrand with new beast hunting quests; Wrath of the Lich King saw a new camp in Sholazar Basin; and Mists of Pandaria saw mighty beasts hunted in Valley of the Four Winds.
